Square Enix has announced that it recently established a brand new company, one whose focus will not exclusively be on gaming. Instead, Square Enix AI & Arts Alchemy will focus on R&D of entertainment AI, while also pursuing business opportunities related to AI technology with other companies.
While Square Enix broke the news of this new AI-focused company yesterday, Square Enix AI & Arts Alchemy itself was founded a couple of months ago on March 2.
According to Square Enix’s press release announcing the formation of the new company, Square Enix AI & Arts Alchemy will be developing entertainment AI that can be used not only in video games, but across the entertainment industry. Square Enix specifically referenced its AI and art technologies (such as computer graphics) having the potential to expand in scope beyond what they’re currently being used for; thus, the new company will be used to do just that. The company does have a broad and long-ranging portfolio of experience in developing technology alongside its games, and now, Square Enix plans to use that to create a new field of business.
In addition to the creation of these technologies, Square Enix AI & Arts Alchemy will be selling them to companies across the entertainment industry and further working with them to suit their needs. The company plans to “apply the Square Enix group’s knowledge and expertise in art not only to games but to the broader concept of ’entertainment AI.'”
No specific projects have yet been announced, so the implications of this new Square Enix company and field of business for the entertainment industry remains to be seen.
