Japanese video game developer Square Enix has pledged $250,000 to Black Lives Matter.
Amid protests across the nation after the death of George Floyd, brands and companies across the board have been pledging their solidarity and support to organizations dedicated to social change and justice. For Square Enix, the main organization they’ll be backing is Black Lives Matter, a major organization that champions an end to violence and oppression toward the black community around the world. Square Enix is probably most famous for their development of Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Dragon Quest, each of which has sold several million copies worldwide.
Square Enix took to Twitter to announce their donation plan. In addition to the quarter of a million dollars the company is already putting up, they will also match any and all donations made by their employees to Black Lives Matter or any other organization fighting against racism. Along with their financial promise, the company has also made a commitment to taking accountability and learning what they can do with their platform. Prior to their charity Tweet, Square Enix also put out a list of resources for those willing and interested in partaking in education and action.
Global brands like Square Enix standing with Black Lives Matter and using their platforms to enact change is a step forward in a marathon march toward a better and safer world.
