Thanks to the knock-on effect of a little hiccup known as the coronavirus, Square Enix won’t be announcing any new games for the time being. At least, not en masse.
Square Enix (Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider, Nier: Automata, etc. etc.) apparently won’t be hosting any kind of multi-game digital briefing event around summer this year. Optimists had hoped that considering the gaping hole left by E3 2020’s cancellation - meant to take place next month - developers would take it upon themselves to host their own digital off-shoot events around the same time.
While some have indeed opted for this move (à la Microsoft, as well as the Summer Game Fest, Game Developers Conference, and the Guerrilla Collective), others like Bethesda and now Square Enix have confirmed they’ll be doing no such thing, unfortunately. Instead, the latter will apparently be announcing its new releases on an individual basis.
So there’s still reason enough to get excited over potential upcoming releases. According to the folks at Square Enix, their lineup of games for the rest of this year - as well as “the next-generation that lies beyond” - is apparently “stronger than ever.”
