Those looking forward to Sports Story, the multi-sport focused sequel to Golf Story, will be sad to hear that the game has been indefinitely delayed. Originally scheduled for a mid-2020 release, the Switch exclusive indie has hit some development troubles that necessitated pushing its release back.

Developer Sidebar Games made the announcement on Twitter with a video that pays tribute to Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata. “The game has become rather ambitious and we are excited about how it could turn out,” explains the video. “But the price is currently being paid as we try to make our plans into reality.” To that end, Sports Story had to be pushed back to better realize the vision its creators have.

While it’s sad to hear about a delay for any game, things like this are usually for the better. Releasing a game just to capitalize on hype is a surefire way to create a dud. First impressions don’t necessarily mean as much anymore thanks to the internet, but it’s better to release a finished product rather than one that requires constant tinkering.

Golf Story was one of the unsung heroes of the Switch’s launch year, so I’m certainly excited for Sports Story. Here’s hoping it can be everything that Sidebars wants it to be.
