Excited for Mythic Odysseys of Theros? We’ve got a preview of some of the content that will be in the new D&D sourcebook.
We’re still a little over a month away from the release of Mythic Odysseys of Theros, the upcoming D&D 5E expansion that puts players in the Greek-inspired land of Theros. The plane of Theros is yet another setting that originated in Magic: The Gathering as Wizards of the Coast continues to integrate their two best-selling fantasy franchises.
Anyone with a bit of background on Greek Mythology will find Theros to be oddly familiar, from its denizens of centaurs, humans, and satyrs, to its enormous pantheon of gods. And now thanks to a few screenshots of pages on Fantasy Grounds, we’ll find the whole book familiar when it eventually releases in June.
The only fantasy RPG store has 7 pages that give us a taste of what Theros has to offer, starting with character creation. Apparently, Theros is dominated by six races including humans, centaurs, minotaurs, leonin, satyrs, and tritons. Humans, centaurs, tritons, and minotaurs can all be found in previous expansions, so unless these races have specific Theros deviations, we don’t expect to see anything new here. Satyrs and leonin are new, however, with satyrs being forest-dwelling revelers and leonin being masters of the plains.
We also see on the first page that new heroes in Theros are bestowed with something called a “Supernatural Gift.” The table below only has two options for the player to choose from, including Natal Omens and Heroic Feats, but there are sure to be more.
Judging by the description, Natal Omens provides some interesting character background based on a Zodiac-like birth sign, whereas Heroic Feats are most likely just an extra feat.
The second and third pages showcase some great art used in the book as well as some of Theros’ more dangerous denizens, including monsters like the Hythonia and Alseid. Many of these monsters will be familiar to Magic players as they were previously featured on their own creature cards.
According to the seventh page in the preview, Theros has at least 15 gods, but there might be more. There are certainly more than 15 Greek gods, that’s for sure.
Mythic Odysseys of Theros is out on June 2 digitally and will be available physically on July 21.
