The superhero Spawn has been a mainstay of pop culture since the first Spawn comic was published in 1992. Since then he’s been the star of video games, moves, and even an animated HBO mini series.

Spawn has recently returned to the spotlight, having been announced as the next DLC character for Mortal Kombat 11. But Spawn creator, Todd McFarlane, isn’t satisfied with Spawn just being a DLC character in another game. He has now said that he wants to make a new standalone Spawn game.

There have been five Spawn video games, with the first one coming out in 1995. However it’s been almost 20 years since the last one came out. 2003’s Spawn: Armageddon was delightfully brutal like most Spawn properties, but it received mixed to poor reviews from critics, and never spawned a sequel.

McFarlane pointed to advancements in video game technology as a big reason for wanting a new Spawn game. He said that “[Spawn has] been around long enough that video games have come a long, long way just like special effects and movies.” Considering the confirmed features of the PS5, a Spawn game made today would have a whole host of tools that were unavailable back in 2003.

As for the timing of the new game, “selfish Todd says we should do it yesterday.” But despite that, McFarlane thinks that it actually would be a smart move to hold off on making the game. That’s because there’s a Spawn movie in the works right now, and he’d like to capitalize off the buzz from that. However considering the buzz that Spawn’s inclusion in Mortal Kombat is generating, now might be a the right time to strike.

What’s interesting is that despite the the deep lore of the Spawn series, McFarlane doesn’t want to base the theoretical game on any of the existing movies or comics. Instead, he wants to give the game its own original Spawn story. This is because he believes that new video game technology can give fans a version of Spawn that has never been seen before. He went so far as to say that fans still haven’t seen “the the penultimate Spawn” yet.
