Since the first reveal of Ghost of Tsushima at E3 2018, excitement has been surrounding the title. Initial trailers have set up a beautiful samurai world based in the 13th century Japan and as a result, the game has been one of the most anticipated of the year. This anticipation looks set to build after Shu Yoshida published his comments on the game.
Ghost of Tsushima is being developed by Sucker Punch Productions who achieved considerable acclaim for the Infamous game series and this new project looks set to be a thematic departure from previous titles from the company. As a completely new title without many games to compare it with, Ghost of Tsushima has been the focus of a great deal of speculation. While there is still plenty to be revealed about the title, Sony has been sharing snippets and this prompted a response from one of its senior employees.
The Executive Producer of games such as Gran Turismo and Ape Escape, Shuhei Yoshida, responded to another Sony employee who was expressing their excitement for the upcoming title. Yoshida claimed that he had a “feeling this will become my GOTY 2020” and considering the impressive titles scheduled for this year, this is a bold endorsement. The popular employee of Sony is likely to have had first-hand experience with the game and this adds validity to the statement rather than it being based purely on conjecture from teased gameplay. Yoshida has a large following online and as a key personality at Sony, as a result, his support has increased excitement for Ghost of Tsushima yet again.
The PlayStation 5 has a series of exciting games coming in 2020 including CyberPunk 2077 and The Last of Us Part 2. With this in mind, labeling Ghost of Tsushima as a possible game of the year will be considered a huge statement by fans who are interested in the title. It will be interesting to see if the game can satisfy players when it releases as expectations have become increasingly high.
Ghost of Tsushima has faced several delays but it now seems that players won’t have too long to wait before they can experience the game which explores an open-world Feudal Japan. If the game can deliver on its high concept, impressive visuals, and sterling early comments, then players may well be treated to one of the best games of the year.
Ghost of Tsushima launches on July 17, exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
