The rumors were true, but not without a price - or, more so like lack thereof. The good news: Sony has unveiled the time and date for its next State of Play. The bad news: “No big PS5 announcements,” reads the list of what fans can expect from the upcoming online-based event.
Slated for Thursday, August 6th at 1 PM PT/4 PM ET, Sony’s followup to their last big State of Play, which revealed the PS5 console in all of its glory, will merely be a showcase for virtual reality, forthcoming PS4 titles, as well as a return visit to some indies and third-party PS5 games already shown. If fans weren’t already foaming at the mouth for any and all PS5 news, they certainly will be following August 6th.
In a rather short post on the PlayStation blog site, Sony’s Senior Director of Content Communications, Sid Shuman, divulges on the next big PlayStation spotlight event:
“The episode is weighing in at 40+ minutes(!). We’ve got a great lineup in store featuring plenty of new gameplay footage and other game updates. Can’t wait to hear what you think!
Then, there’s also the question of price. As both Sony and Microsoft’s price feud wanes, more and more hype continues to build for the former’s system. With Sony expecting to sell 120 million units, the Japan-based company seems not too worried about pricing, but more so interested in showcasing its ecosystem, something Microsoft clearly has the upper hand in. Even so, the PS5 subreddit has thus far been flooded with prior Xbox fanboys jumping ship for the next-gen Sony system. A recent UK poll pile drives the point that Sony is the next-gen frontrunner with 84 percent of respondents naming the PS5 their console of choice over the XSX.
While first-party games might be on every Sony fans’ mind, not to mention price, there’s also the dual-sided question of UX and UI. It is known that the PS5 will have what is called an Activities feature, which utilizes deep link technology and the SSD to leap into a game mode at a moment’s notice. What else the Sony console may have in store for players remains as top secret as the overall price range for both the PS5 and XSX.
Whether you’re excited or not, tune in Thursday on either YouTube or Twitch to see what Sony has in store for the future PlayStation console.
