The PlayStation 5 Showcase featured so much. Many new games were announced like the upcoming God of War sequel and viewers got a closer look at previously announced games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales. But one of the biggest announcements came with that of the PlayStation Plus Collection.
Advertised as the new PlayStation Plus benefit for PS5, the service looks like Sony’s answer to Microsoft’s Game Pass. The service will provide a “selection of generation defining PS4 games” including fan-favorites like The Last of Us: Remastered, Persona 5, God of War, Days Gone, and much more.
The entire collection will be available at launch for PS5 users, with every game ready to download and enjoy. There is, however, no official word yet on how many games the PlayStation Plus Collection will provide.
With Microsoft focusing on a ‘play anywhere’ mentality, Game Pass has been a massive selling point for them and something Sony hasn’t had the equivalent of until now. This will be the perfect opportunity for new PS5 owners to catch up on previous games they might have otherwise missed and give them plenty to do as the PS5 library grows.
Another question surrounding the PlayStation Plus Collection is regarding PlayStation Now. That particular service is more known for providing games from even older generations and while new releases make an appearance every now and then, it’s not always common. This could be an opportunity to combine the two services and create a larger library for players, but if Sony wants to stick with PS4 titles for the Collection, the two may stay separate.
Streaming video games is a relatively new idea in the grand scheme of things, but if anything is to be learned from Microsoft’s success with Game Pass, creating a similar service is the right way to go for PlayStation. It will allow players to experience new games they may never have tried and bundling it with PlayStation Plus already gives them a large audience during the PS5 launch.
