Sony has recommended gamers who plan on tuning in to this week’s PS5 event do so wearing headphones to get the most out of its “cool audio work”.

With each passing day, it gets harder and harder to believe that the PlayStation 5 will be on the market by the end of 2020. There are theories floating around that the next-gen console’s launch will be delayed. While that has not been confirmed or even hinted at by Sony, it would make sense when taking into account how little we know about the PS5 less than six months short of its apparent release date.

No price, no launch titles, and Sony hasn’t even revealed what the console looks like. The Xbox Series X, on the other hand, has been revealed, and some of its gameplay shown off. The hope is that Sony will reveal all the information fans have been waiting for during its special event on June 11.

As of right now, although the delayed event’s new date and time has been confirmed, there is still little information in regard to what exactly will be revealed. There’s a very strong possibility we could get to the end of this week without knowing what the PS5 looks like and what it will cost. However, Sony Interactive Entertainment communications director Sid Shuman has hinted at what viewers of the event can expect.

Or should we say listeners? Shuman recommended in a blog post that those tuning in on June 11 should wear headphones for the event. Apparently there will be some “cool audio work” during the show. That makes sense as although we know very little about the PS5, it has been revealed that there has been a lot of attention paid to making the audio a key feature.

The PS5’s Tempest Engine will support hundreds of higher quality sound sources. A vast difference compared to the 50 supported by PSVR. All people have a unique HRTF which dictates the way in which we experience sound. Sony has studied the HRTF of around a hundred people in order to give PS5 players different options, and it sounds like all that work will be on display this Thursday.
