Sony has recently filed a patent that may pertain to a feature that might be in the PS5, which will be revealed at the Summer Games Fest today. According to the patent, we may soon see an AI take control of an opponent’s character during a multiplayer game if they quit in the middle of the game.
Many people are excited to know what the PlayStation 5 looks like and what it’s capable of. We know Sony might be working on a feature to make streaming and sharing video easier, but a feature mentioned in a recently-filed patent looks to be a big game-changer. If this patent is real, then an AI can take over for a disconnected multiplayer opponent and simulate the actions they would take.
As the patent abstract describes, “While a first player of the multiplayer game is playing the multiplayer game, the first player’s actions are tracked and stored. When the first player quits or stops responding before the multiplayer game has completed, the first player is replaced by a computer-simulated version of the first player that selects its actions based on probabilities calculated from the tracked actions of the first player. The multiplayer game is thus able to continue without interruption or disruption, and the first player’s playstyle is preserved.”
While it’s possible nothing may come out of this patent filing, this technology seems like a great way to keep multiplayer games going. Whether your opponent is disconnected by a power outage or simply decides to ragequit, online multiplayer games won’t have to worry about matches being ruined by players with poor connections or anger management skills. This would be a major boon for avid players of games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which recently went through a major update.
We don’t know much else about this technology, but the PS5 reveal, titled “The Future of Gaming,“will be airing this afternoon. We’ll no doubt learn more about the PS5, its games, and what it can do when it starts today at 4 PM Eastern.
