Sony has seen great success with recent Spider-Man films, including its crossover with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and spin-off films like Venom. Its movie universe, apparently known as the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC), has a number of upcoming films possibly including one based on Madame Web.
While it’s unclear whether this character is actually going to be the basis of her own movie, as sources told Variety her “age and medical condition” may lead to the project becoming something else, it is certain that S.J. Clarkson has been signed to develop Sony’s first female-centric franchise movie. Clarkson’s previous directorial work includes episodes of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black and Marvel’s Jessica Jones.
Sony has not commented on the matter, and no actors or writers are attached to the project. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has already led to the delay of other SPUMC films like Morbius until 2021, so potential work starting on new properties now seems unlikely.
That said, Sony has been working to shore up a number of its upcoming Marvel-connected films even beyond the potential Madame Web. The company recently hired Arrowverse co-creator Marc Guggenheim to help write a Jackpot movie.
