The next generation of console could be PlayStation’s shortest life cycle to date as insiders claim the PS5’s replacement could be here in just five years.
The next generation of console is almost upon us. In fact, it might worth ditching the “almost” at this point. Gamers now know so much about the PS5 and the Xbox Series X that it feels like the consoles have all but arrived. Then again, there is still no word on how much the consoles will cost or an official release date for either one, so perhaps there is a little more juice in the current generation left to be squeezed.
As for the length of the current generation, it has lasted a little longer than usual. When it comes to PlayStation, its first three generations have lasted six years each. The PS4, however, has stuck around for seven years. The pattern would dictate the PS5 will last about the same length of time, but apparently not.
According to DigiTimes, Sony’s Taiwanese supply chain has revealed the PS5’s lifecycle could be shorter than any other PS console to have come before it. It estimates that it will only last five years by which point we’re assuming Sony will be preparing for the release of the PS6.
After seven years of the PS4 and Xbox One, it seems crazy that by this time in 2025, the hype for the PS6 and possibly whatever console Microsoft has planned will be in full swing. There’s every chance this isn’t the case, of course, and even a possibility that the global pandemic still underway has affected Sony’s future plans. COVID-19 might not have delayed the release of the PS5, but the knock-on effect could impact the PS6.
In-keeping with present-day culture, some people are looking ahead to future generations of console before the next generation has even arrived. As for the PS5 and the Series X, both Sony and Microsoft have given gamers plenty to get excited about. Now, if we could be given a vague idea of how much the two of them will cost, that would be just terrific.
