SonicFox, five-time EVO champion and all-round fighting game legend, has been immortalized in Skullgirls as an NPC.
The NPC is based off their fursona, which most Esports followers should already be familiar with. SonicFox can be found in a variation of the Class Notes stage, chilling next to a blackboard and grinning as you train by beating the snot out of another character.
SonicFox made several Twitter posts thanking the Skullgirls team and animator and pixel artist @SuckMyJones for the inclusion of their NPC. They also highlighted an easy-to-miss Easter Egg: if you watch SonicFox closely after shaking the screen, the NPC’s jacket will reveal a tiny trans pride flag.
At this time, the update that adds SonicFox to the game is only available on PC, but some people are already mad about it, because people always seem to be mad when SonicFox succeeds (which is often). One disgruntled Twitter user even posted a mod in SonicFox’s replies removing their NPC from the game, and scrolling through SonicFox’s Twitter will bring up their amused replies to haters.
A few outliers aside, the response to SonicFox’s inclusion in Skullgirls has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s no wonder: they are the world’s best Skullgirls player, after all. In addition to adding SonicFox to the game, Lab Zero Games also updated a community member’s NPC sprite to better reflect her gender transition.
