Somerville, the side-scrolling adventure game from one of the developers of Limbo, is launching in 2022.

The game was shown as part of Xbox and Bethesda’s E3 2021 conference, where it was also announced that the game will be launching next year. No exact release date was given, but the year announcement is the first update we’ve seen for the game in some time.

The trailer showcased a small family in their home before aliens seem to invade the Earth. The man and the dog are then shown adventuring across the world, although the rest of the family aren’t seen very much after. Both graphically and mechanically it looks very similar to Inside and Limbo, with the player looking to run, jump and explore across a near post-apocalyptic area.

The official description for the game describes it as a “sci-fi adventure grounded in the intimate repercussions of large scale conflict”. This seems to imply that the game will focus on the smaller family and character drama element of a worldwide invasion, which we see some glimpses of in the trailer.

Somerville comes from Jumpship Games and its similarities to Limbo and Inside shouldn’t come as a big surprise considering one of the developers of those games is working on this game too. This trailer also revealed that Somerville will be launching day one as part of Xbox Game Pass, which was a key focus of the E3 presentation.
