This may come as a surprise to a few of you, but they’re making a Metal Gear Solid film. It’s already got a writer and a director, it’s being backed by Sony Pictures, and now it’s even got a star headlining the show.
As reported by Deadline, Oscar Isaac will play Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid film adaptation. Isaac’s most recent role was as Rebel pilot turned General Poe Dameron in the latest Star Wars trilogy, and he’ll play Duke Leto Atreides in the upcoming Dune adaptation.
I haven’t heard Isaac do his best Solid Snake impression, but he seems to be a fine choice based on his past roles. Can’t complain, really. Well, I can complain that it’s not David Hayter, the original voice of Snake and Big Boss throughout the first four major titles in the Metal Gear Solid franchise, but Sony could do a lot worse than Oscar Isaac.
From previous reports, we know that the Metal Gear Solid movie has been in the works for the past six years. Jordan Vogt-Roberts is the director and showrunner, while Avi Arad serves as producer and Peter Kang is executive producer. The script is written by Derek Connolly, the same guy who wrote The Rise of Skywalker and Pokemon Detective Pikachu.
In an inteview on Animal Talking, Vogt-Roberts told anxious Metal Gear fans that he will fight to ensure that the movie stays “true to [Hideo] Kojima-san’s spirit,” which I assume means there will be a bisexual vampire and a dude that turns into a swarm of bees.
There’s no release date set for the movie as filming has been delayed due to the pandemic. Given Oscar Isaac is set to star in two TV shows and a movie, one doubts he’ll find the time to star in another film before 2022.
If you’d like to relive the glory days of Metal Gear Solid, you can play the first two games over on GOG.com. And if you’re missing an arm, good news! Open Biotics teamed up with Konami to produce an official Metal Gear Solid prosthesis that really works.
