The next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Spirit event, “Weaken Minions,” begins this Friday.

One of the biggest things Nintendo hyped about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was Spirits. In essence, Spirits replaced Trophies as the main collectible. Spirits grant the player certain abilities and defenses, such as starting the match holding a boomerang. This is a big gameplay feature in Adventure Mode: World of Light.

Many fans have started debating if Spirits are superior to Trophies. On one hand, the multitudes of Spirits allow for characters across many different games, from Shantae to Metal Sonic. It is quite impressive how many character Spirits there are. On the other hand, Trophies offer descriptions of the character or item, and are 3D models instead of flat images.

Like the themed online tournaments, Nintendo frequently holds Spirit Board events. The most recent was a blue event, which featured blue characters like Krystal and Dialga appearing on the board. These events are good for players looking to have a little extra fun as they increase their Spirits collection.

This week, Nintendo (via SmashBrosJP) is debuting its latest Spirit Board event. Titled, “Game Changer: Weaken Minions!,” achieving victory on the board will give players “triple the usual” Spirit Points. The main feature of this event, however, is that players will earn the Weaken Minions support item upon winning a battle.

The Weaken Minions support item is useful, as it has opponents outside the main enemy take greater damage and knockback. The Spirit event begins this Friday, August 14, and runs until Monday, August 17.

It is interesting to consider if Spirits will become a mainstay in Super Smash Bros. past Ultimate. Spirits are almost certainly easier to implement than Trophies. At the same time, one can easily see Spirits being exclusive to Ultimate. Either way, there’s not much use in discussing this too heavily right now. Ultimate will continue to be Nintendo’s Smash Bros. experience for years to come. There are still five DLC fighters on the way, and who knows if Nintendo will surprise-drop a new thing like with Small Battlefield. Some players are also probably still collecting all the game’s Spirits, putting the Spirit Board events to good use.
