Yesterday, Masahiro Sakurai announced that the next fighter to be added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s incredible roster would be popular ARMS fighter Min-Min. Many fans were excited by the announcement and social media blew up as players anticipated her release.

Yet, as everyone was excitedly getting ready for Min-Min to join the roster of Smash fighters, suddenly the name of another fighter started to trend on Twitter: Fire Emblem’s Byleth, aka the most recent fighter to be added to the game.

Byleth was announced back in January as the latest DLC fighter for Smash Ultimate, though their inclusion in the game was met with mixed reviews. While some hardcore Fire Emblem fans, especially those of the Byleth’s game Three Houses, were excited, many expressed disappointment over Sakurai’s inclusion of yet another Fire Emblem fighter.

As a result, while yesterday should’ve been a day to fully celebrate Min Min’s addition to the Smash roster, many Twitter users took it as an opportunity to express their hatred of the Fire Emblem franchise and its fans, as well as Byleth as a character and Smash fighter.

The Twitter bashing got so popular that “Byleth” was trending alongside “Min Min”, the actual character yesterday’s reveal was about.

The hate comments range from comparing the two character’s release trailers, fighting skills, game franchises, fanbases, and more.

On the bright side, while Twitter appeared to go up in arms with fans duking it out over the two new DLC fighters, there were some wholesome moments online.  it appears many fans are excited by Min Min’s inclusion in the game. Her character marks the first female fighter in Smash’s expansion pass; though Byleth can be a man or a woman depending on the player’s preferences, their default avatar is male.

Additionally, many clueless individuals who didn’t realize the nasty connotations regarding Byleth’s trending name took the trending notification as motivation to post their own tweets in support of the character.

Twitter users also took yesterday to remind fans of a similar incident that occurred six months ago during Byleth’s own announcement:

Min Min will be added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on June 29.
