There has been endless speculation about which characters will make it into the Super Smash Bros. roster since the first game. Every few weeks, a rumor will spread like wildfire across the internet, claiming to know who will be joining the game next. It’s gotten so bad that. Super Smash Bros. head developer Masahiro Sakurai has said that he can’t even discuss other games he’s playing, because if he even mentions another game it will lead to speculation.

This comes after many Smash Bros. fans started speculating that Sakurai was secretly teasing a new DLC character in his tweets. In an interview with Japanese publication Famitsu, Sakurai said that he “plays a ton of games” but generally avoids discussing what he’s playing because fans will end up reading into it.

Sakurai says he goes as far as “to decline appearing on TV shows or programs that highlight a specific game.” This makes sense, as Sakurai has become the public face of the Smash franchise. If he was in anyway associated with the promotion of another game, fans would be quick to assume that there is going to be a Smash tie in. Considering how many characters are already rumored to be coming to the Smash Ultimate, it makes sense that Sakurai want’s to keep speculation to a minimum.

Speaking of Super Smash Bros. rumors, it appears that the next DLC character will come from the ARMS game. So far it’s unclear which character it will be, but there has been a lot of speculation online. It looks like Sakurai’s not giving any hints, so fans won’t find out until Nintendo wants them to.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Nintendo Switch.
