Everybody’s favorite vampire hunter is back in Unmatched: Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the latest release from publishers Mondo Games and Restoration Games.
The Unmatched series of tabletop games is the spiritual successor to the 2002 Hasbro board game, Star Wars Epic Duels. Players control a primary character and two minor characters. The characters move around a map and fight against up to six people using decks of cards. Movement is limited to the playable area, which is laid out in squares about the size of the miniature footprint. Epic Duels remains popular through ongoing fan support and creation and has even seen new light with the release of an updated and revised version called Unmatched and co-created by original designer Rob Daviau and Justin Jacobson. This is where Restoration Games comes in, as not only is Jacobson the founder, but they specialize in giving old games a second chance at life.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer was originally created by Joss Whedon for the silver screen in 1992. Five years later he brought the idea back in the form of a television show which proved popular. So much so that it ran for seven seasons and had a spin-off show, Angel, which ran for five seasons. It arguably launched the careers for several of its main stars, with their likeness continuing to be used to this day in the continuing adventures that feature in the novels and comic books that are still being published.
Unmatched: Buffy The Vampire Slayer brings the hybrid board/card game together with the enduring appeal of Buffy. It is a stand-alone entity that can be played by itself but can be combined with other Unmatched games and sets to enhance the experience. It features four of the main characters from the show, Buffy, Spike, Willow, and Angel. We have also seen reports that Faith will also be included, but her name is absent from the box art we have seen to date.
Unmatched: Buffy The Vampire Slayer is earmarked for an October 2020 release, just in time to reenact your favorite scenes from the show this Halloween!
