WayForward has announced that Shantae and the Seven Sirens, the fifth entry in their popular platforming series, will not have paid DLC or expansions. However, players can still expect free additional content to be added to the game moving forward.
Shantae and the Seven Sirens follows Shantae as she journeys to Paradise Island to celebrate the Half-Genie Festival. There, she befriends a group of half genies who are kidnapped by the titular Seven Sirens, kicking off Shantae’s underwater rescue mission as she explores the Sunken City hidden below the island. The game promises a wild and ambitious adventure as Shantae contends with the Seven Sirens and the antics of her treasure hungry nemesis, Risky Boots.
WayForward stated prior to the game’s PC and console release that they did not have plans for paid DLC at the time. A recent interview with Nintendo Life confirmed that the company will not be releasing paid DLC or an “Ultimate Edition” for Shantae and the Seven Sirens, but several free content updates are already in the works. What those updates will include is not yet known at this time, but WayForward will be posting more information on that in the following months.
In the meantime, Shantae fans may be pleased to learn that WayForward is open to remaking the original game. It’s been nearly 18 years since Shantae debuted on the Game Boy Color, and nostalgic players have eagerly wondered whether developers would consider revisiting the original. Matt Bozen, one of Shantae’s creators, expressed that while the company will be prioritizing new games and workshopping future entries into the franchise, a remake is still on the table.
Bozen also discussed the possibility of a 3D Shantae game. Given that Shantae is best known as a side-scrolling, Metroidvania-style platformer, a 3D installment would definitely be a stark change from the franchise’s other entries. The developers have discussed a 3D Shantae game for many years, but it doesn’t seem as though this generation will the one to introduce 3D to the franchise.
Shantae and the Seven Sirens is available on iOS, PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
