It seems that Lo Wang got a bit too excited and shot off his load a bit early. After speculation and random tweeting from the official Shadow Warrior account over the weekend, Devolver Digital has confirmed that Shadow Warrior 3 is officially a game. Releasing in 2021 for PC (and likely to get ported to PS5 and Xbox Series X), the game is said to launch the “off-beat first-person shooter series to the next level.”
Flying Wild Hog game director Kuba Opoń said, “We are beyond excited to bring Shadow Warrior fans a completely fresh experience, and we can’t wait to show off the new features we have in store for them.” Those features will be revealed during Devolver’s Livestream set for July 11. This early announcement was likely to curb any leaks that may have happened.
The plot for this new entry seems to take some inspiration from the 1997 original. Lo Wang will be doing battle with his former employer Orochi Zilla and will be inadvertently unleashing an ancient dragon upon the world. Using his quick wits and massive arsenal, Lo Wang will be traveling to uncharted parts of the world and fighting hordes of undead creatures, ancient beings, and random Zilla goons.
A new teaser was recently released and while it doesn’t show us actual gameplay, it gives us a good idea of some new features that Shadow Warrior 3 will have. Lo Wang seems to have access to some new mystical powers, but he’ll also come equipped with a grappling hook. If that wasn’t enough of a traversal option, Wang can even wall-run like he’s living out his best Matrix dreams.
There’s no word on whether or not co-op will make a reappearance, but a message from Opoń practically confirms it. “Shadow Warrior 3 will see him [Wang] face a threat so huge it may be too big even for him to handle.” If that’s not a sly nod to Shadow Warrior 2, I’m not sure what is.
Normally I’m against teaser trailers, but with the Devolver stream mere days away, I can accept this one. We won’t be waiting for months to figure out what Flying Wild Hog is doing and the trailer is pointing in a solid direction.
