Update:Kotaku has received word from publisher Devolver Digital that Google has secured timed exclusivity on Stadia, which is keeping Serious Sam 4 from releasing on consoles until 2021. We can expect ports to PS4 and Xbox One sometime next year.

After what seems like an eternity, Croteam’s Serious Sam 4 is nearly ready for its debut. In a new teaser released this morning, publisher Devolver Digital has confirmed that Sam’s return will be released in August 2020. While no firm date was given, the title will be coming to both Steam and Stadia on PC.

What’s notable about this announcement is the removal of the rather silly subtitle. Serious Sam 4 was previously going by the name Planet Badass, but that’s gotten the ax. At least the promise of “thousands of enemies” is still intact, because that is bound to be a sight to behold. Previous games in the series were known for pushing the boundaries of acceptable enemy counts, so I say bring it on.

Alongside the release date announcement is a new trailer for something called the “Legion System.” This is how Serious Sam 4 will be able to handle so many enemies littering your screen. The trailer makes mention of 10,000 foes at once, though I doubt we’ll see that at all times. It would also be rather excessive if you cranked up enemy health values to 400% (something past games offer).

You can currently pre-order the game on Steam for $39.99. To celebrate the announcement, the rest of the Serious Sam series is on sale with a massive discount. All of the main entries are worth getting and a few of the spin-offs are fun. I highly recommend I Hate Running Backwards, which is fairly good after its rather large patch.

As for what we can expect with this latest entry, four-player online co-op is going to be included. I would be a little saddened if split-screen gets cut, but at least some form of multiplayer is sticking around. It just wouldn’t be a Serious Sam game without it.

We’ll also be introduced to new enemies and finally, we’ll have a game not taking place in Egypt. As wonderful of a setting as Africa might be, Serious Sam can’t only be trekking through the desert. Let the man have some freedom, Croteam!
