Microsoft has revealed the selection of free games available to Xbox Live Gold subscribers for September 2020 and it’s kind of a mixed bag. Classics Armed and Dangerous (which is the clear winner here) and de Blob 2 are nice but relatively old titles you may have played before. Xbox One users will be getting The Division and The Book of Unwritten Tales 2. I don’t really know what to say about either.

As much fondness as I have for LucasArts’ 2003 third-person shooter, it definitely is a little dated. Armed and Dangerous released during the period where third-person titles weren’t yet codified with standardized controls, so it plays funky on a console. The humor can also be all over the place, but the developers had their hearts in the right place. It’s still worth playing through, even if you only do it once.

The Division, though, is kind of pointless in 2020. The Division 2 does literally everything better and is often on sale for dirt cheap. I suppose you could run through the “story,” but it’s not like Ubisoft games have particularly deep narratives. Most of the time, the interesting premise gets squandered half-way through to become a cookie-cutter action title that has nothing interesting to say…you know, on top of the history of trying to cover up abuse.

One can’t complain about the price, though. Since everything is free (or rather, you’re paying for it with your subscription), the only thing these games will cost you is some time. Xbox One users are getting a raw deal, but the classic games are both solid.

It’s just a shame that Microsoft can’t seem to get any must-have games through this promotion anymore. Game Pass really has surpassed the quality on offer with Games with Gold and I think it is seriously time for the company to consider dropping this incentive. It had a good run, but there are different ways to get great games into gamers hands that are more effective.
