Sega has launched its own music brand in Japan. The video game company has already begun producing tracks under Sega Music, the official name of this new venture. The brand’s first project release is an album titled, Sakura Wars Complete Collection.
Sega, the video game developer that gave the world Sonic the Hedgehog and the Sega Genesis, was founded in 1960 and has in recent years been more of a nostalgic favorite than a hit producing gaming company. This first musical project was for the release of an album based on Sakura Wars—known in Japan as New Sakura Taisen Kayo—an anime-style action role playing game for the PS4.
Sega Music will not be a solo studio, but will work in conjuncture with different music labels to produce soundtrack music. For Sakura Wars, Sega Music worked with Wave Master Entertainment, a record label under Sega’s umbrella and the successor to Sega Digital Studios. With this first release, Sega Music has also promised new projects to come in the future. There are still few details on how or if Sega Music will operate in the west and what exactly these coming releases will include, but by all reports Sega Music is charging full speed ahead.
Here’s hoping that Sega Music is a step in the right direction for the classic company!
