We’ve asked for it, and Rare listened. Sea of Thieves is finally getting private servers.

Sea of Thieves is seeing a lot of new players thanks to its recent release on Steam, and a lot of those players are finding out that Sea of Thieves has a bit of a griefer problem. While combat at sea can be thrilling, having your ship sunk by the same group of PvP professionals over and over can get tired real fast.

We’ve been calling for private servers here at TheGamer after our own experiences on Sea of Thieves left a bitter taste in our mouths, and it looks like Rare is taking the bait.

Sea of Thieves has just announced that they’re “going to bring an early Alpha version of Custom Servers to Sea of Thieves as a tool for selected creators and community groups to utilize for community events.”

These servers won’t be accessible to just anyone. Only a few content creators and certain groups within the Sea of Thieves community will be able to access these private servers, and those servers won’t work the same as the live game. You won’t be able to earn gold or progress reputation with the various factions in Sea of Thieves as Custom Servers are not intended to be just so you can perform PvE content without fear of PvPers sinking your boat.

Instead, the objective of this alpha test is to gather data, feedback, and “prioritize future development priorities.” Creators and community groups stand to benefit the most by removing potential griefers from ruining their content and/or events, so Rare is starting with them.

Rare has also made it clear that they expect this alpha to last awhile, so don’t hold your breath for private servers anytime soon. However, the end goal is to have Custom Servers as an accessible option from the Pirate Emporium once it’s ready for implementation. We just don’t know when that might be.
