It’s time to briefly steal the spotlight off of next-gen games to highlight Rare’s 2018 action-adventure Sea of Thieves. The game has been sailing the seas for two years now, and in its time, it’s raked in some impressive accolades.
Thanks to analyst Benji-Sales on Twitter, some insightful figures and key facts have been revealed about Sea of Thieves’ growth since its release. To start with, the nautical multiplayer has received consistent growth since its debut, accumulating over 11 million players worldwide in this year alone. It was also noted that the ratio of console players to PC users was split down the middle, and the game has had its biggest market success in Korea and China.
Undertaking the role of a pirate to complete voyages and bump into other buccaneers (players) along the way sounds delightful. Its “shared world” concept allows you to buddy up with other players to conquer the seven seas, or unleash a rain of cannonballs on passers-by to fulfill your dream of becoming Captain Barbossa. While it sounds like the ultimate peg-leg experience - complete with a companion parrot - Sea of Thieves was not everyone’s bottle of rum. Nobody was against its colorful pastel graphics or its combat physics, but its lack of content and repetitive quests caused Rare’s ship to sink a little. Sea of Thieves was considered to be more of a party game to be enjoyed with friends, rather than a solo endeavor.
The popularity surrounding its multiplayer feature perhaps had an overwhelming surge this year due to the pandemic, where many people were tapping into co-op games to connect with friends and family during lockdown. Dividing audiences with its gameplay style has certainly not detracted from its success over the years, as it is regarded as one of Xbox Studio’s most lucrative projects.
Sea of Thieves has also sailed into next-gen by receiving enhanced 4K graphics and 60 fps on the Xbox Series X, to make swashbuckling even more enjoyable. Rare also jumped on this year’s bandwagon of making it an unofficial necessity to include pets in every game. Since August, pirate life became so much better by allowing cats, dogs, monkeys, and parrots to be your companion.
