We’ve been talking a lot more about Iron Harvest, the dieselpunk real-time strategy game that takes place in the same fictionalized alternate history as Scythe, but that’s just because Scythe: Digital Edition already came out in 2018 on Steam. It’s a faithful recreation of the board game for the digital world, but it’s a lot faster to play since you don’t have to worry about setting up a massive board and gathering a bunch of friends first.

Although games can still take a while. Scythe can be played with anywhere between 1-5 players, and if one of those players is new, they might need some extra time to make decisions.

Scythe: Digital Edition has a score of 89% on Steam, and the original Scythe is considered the best new board game of 2016 and is still in the top 20 board games of all time according to BoardGameGeek.com. Porting it to mobile seems like a no brainer.

Developer The Knights Of Unity and Asmodee Digital have unleashed Scythe: Digital Edition for both iOS and Android devices. You can download the premium game for the low price of $8.99, but this gives you the whole kit and caboodle. There are no ads, no microtransactions, and no interruptions. Just you and turn-based 4x strategy in a virtual board game.

For those new to the world of 1920+, it’s an alternate history where The Great War ended with turning to five separate factions: the Saxony Empire, Crimean Khanate, Rusviet Union, Polania Republic, and the Nordic Kingdom. Each side is trying to secure Europe in its own special way, building their economies and respective empires through conquest.

To do that, each faction builds an army of standard infantry as well as giant Mechs–hulking war machines that are built by an independent city-state known as “The Factory.” Not only is everyone fighting over Europe, but they’re also fighting for control of The Factory in order to secure a supply of Mechs.

Just as on Steam, the mobile version of Scythe: Digital Edition can be played with anywhere from 1-5 players, but the mobile version adds “Hotseat mode” which allows you to pass around your phone so everyone can play on a single device. And if you don’t have any friends, don’t worry! There’s still online multiplayer with crossplay between Android and iOS platforms, and there’s always singleplayer against the AI.
