Scribblenauts is coming back, and this time it’s angry.
Well, as angry as a multiplayer puzzle game can get. Which in my experience can be pretty frickin’ angry.
Just announced by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is Scribblenauts Showdown, a brand new Scribblenauts game coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game will not only have the same kind of puzzle-solving adventure we’ve all come to expect, but also feature a multiplayer component where you summon objects with words to beat your opponent senseless. Literally.
Ok, not literally. More figuratively, but with words. Lexicologically?
In case your new or just weren’t born before 2009, Scribblenauts is a puzzle game where you type in a word and then that word comes to life. The game comes with a database of over 35,000 nouns that you can summon into the game just by writing it, from animals, weapons, and famous people to vehicles, foods, and even internet memes.
Although, in the original game you could only summon memes that existed before 2009. One assumes that the upcoming game will include such august memes as Roll Safe or Cash Me Ousside, How Bou Dah.
Showdown will have several different gameplay modes to choose from. First, there’s the usual single player mode that follows the same tried and true Scribblenauts formula we’ve all come to know and love, where you are presented with a bunch of puzzles to solve by summoning things with your pen. Next is Showdown Mode, which is a 4-player party game that pits everyone against each other in a Mad Libs-style set of minigames. Finally, there’s Versus Mode, which is a 1v1 fight to the literal death.
Wait, not literal - lexicological.
It’s not super clear where the cards will actually come into this game, but IGN reports it will sport a board game-like interface, while Polygon says there will be cards.
Along with Maxwell reprising his role as the main hero of the story, players will be able to create their own Scribblenaut in the game’s distinctive cutesy style.
Scribblenauts Showdown is set to release on Mar. 6, 2018, so start boning up on your nouns now to be in fighting form by Spring.
