Midwinter Entertainment has revealed the first inside look at its forthcoming survival experience, Scavengers.

This free-to-play competitive strategic shooter (say that quickly three times) combines open-world sandbox survival with class-based PvP combat, all condensed into a frozen wasteland resplendent with loot and ravaging ice storms. A closed alpha will be held on the weekend of September 18-20.

Channeling gameplay reminiscent of Apex Legends and The Forest, Scavengers drops players into an unruly ice-gouged wasteland, wherein teams of three face off against one another to survive. It isn’t only real-world competitors you will be up against, however - the weather itself will nibble at your toes along with the planet’s native species.

Midwinter Entertainment is owned by Improbable, the company behind the innovative SpatialOS networking technology powering Scavengers’ groundbreaking AI numbers. There’s going to be a lot to shoot at, basically.

Players will be divvied up into teams of three, each with a specific class of Explorer. These varied specialists are distinguished by their abilities and weaponry.  As you progress in Scavengers, you’ll unlock new abilities and blueprints, which specifically will allow you to craft even more weapons of varying lethality. Whether it be stealth action, guns blazing, or pitting the environment against the competing team, all modes of engagement are at the player’s discretion. Just make sure to collect as many data points as possible, and don’t go gently into Outlander encampments.

This isn’t Fall Guys or Fortnite, as Midwinter itself coins Scavenger as a “Player-vs-Environment-vs-Player” experience. The world itself is out to kill you. Working together with your trio is of utmost importance, and the only way to succeed is through open communication and expert survival.

“The team at Midwinter is committed to an open, community-driven development environment,” said Josh Holmes, CEO and creative director of Midwinter Entertainment. “For more than a year we’ve been quietly testing with thousands of players from our community, whose invaluable contributions have refined, expanded, and validated our vision for Scavengers. As we prepare for Closed Alpha and Beta later this year, we’re looking to expand our community and use this pre-alpha playtest window to provide us with critical learnings leading into our launch.”

Scavengers is coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X in 2021.
