SanDisk has introduced a new line Micr0SDXC cards for Nintendo Switch that add storage and speed to your Switch for a modest price. Branded accessories can sometimes mislead uninformed shoppers into buying inferior products, but in this case, these Nintendo-branded SD cards are the perfect power-up for any Switch player.
It wasn’t until April’s 10.0.0 update that the Switch allowed transferring downloaded games onto external storage, so anyone who has been holding off on adding a memory card will definitely want to add one. Transferring games from the Switch’s internal storage to an SD frees up space, which in turn makes the system run faster and creates more space for games.
SanDisk provided us with a 256gb card to test, and after admiring the bright yellow microSD I slid it into the card slot under the kickstand on my Switch (also compatible with the Switch Lite). The Switch needed a quick update and restart before the card would read. It then showed an actual capacity of about 232 goods, which was higher than I expected compared to other microSD cards I’ve used.
Transferring is as simple as navigating to the Storage page in the Settings and selecting the option to move games from internal storage to an SD card. You can then choose which games to move. There’s a handy capacity meter there that illustrates how much storage space will be taken up by each game as you add it to the list of titles to transfer.
I was able to transfer about 35gbs in just over 5 minutes. Because of the relatively high read and write speed I felt comfortable transferring all of my games to the memory card. Animal Crossing New Horizons, which has notoriously long load times for me, actually seems to run faster on this memory card than it did on my internal storage. Faster AND more storage space, what more could you want?
The SanDisk MicroSDXC for Nintendo Switch looks great on a shelf and makes it easy for consumers and gift-buyers that may not be tech-fluent make sure they’re buying the correct product. Casual players and power players alike can benefit from expanding their Switch storage and these new SanDisk MicroSDXC cards are the best way to do it.
