In one of the more bizarre crossovers I’ve seen in some time, the final DLC character for Samurai Shodown’s second season will be the “Warden” from Ubisoft’s 2017 multiplayer title For Honor. It’s not that a knight fight a big sword is out of place in SNK’s world (in fact, For Honor is all about mashing up different time periods in battle), but more that no one could have even predicted this coming.

Some joke posts were made by fans on Twitter the day before, but who seriously saw this as viable? SNK and Ubisoft are so far removed from one another that this almost comes off as a joke. Still, Warden looks pretty good and I’m all for something ostensibly “out there.” It’s just a bit jarring, is all.

Warden will be available for all versions of Samurai Shodown (PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and Stadia) on June 24, 2020. I’m not sure how DLC works on Stadia, but you’ll be able to grab him as part of the season pass or as an individual purchase.

Announced at the New Game Plus Expo this morning, SNK didn’t make any mention of a third season pass. It’s unlikely that Samurai Shodown is going to wind down after less than a year on the market, but I don’t think many people are too excited at the announcement of Warden.

There’s still a ton of characters from the series’ past that fans want to see in this new game. SNK doesn’t have to specifically answer to them, but it would be nice to have someone like Gen-An return. Even Cham-Cham would be nice, considering her brother Tam-Tam is on the roster. With both of these passes now complete, the total roster number is up to 25 characters. That’s not the largest in the series, but still a pretty respectable number.

I’m not sure Samurai Shodown needs any more crossover/guest characters, so I hope for the inevitable third season that SNK focuses on returning veterans. If Warden can make it, it’s definitely time for some of the wackier characters to make an appearance. Clearly realism isn’t the goal, after all.
