Almost a full year after its console release, SNK’s 2019 reboot of Samurai Shodown will finally be heading to PC. Coming this spring, there’s a bit of bad news for certain players attached here: the port will be an Epic Games Store exclusive. SNK didn’t break the news, but rather an update trailer from Epic for new titles coming this season revealed that the bushido brawler will be heading to its storefront sometime in the near future.
Honestly, this isn’t the worst news around, but it is majorly disappointing. Samurai Shodown doesn’t feature cross-play in any of its available versions and pushing this to the Epic Games Store is going to severely limit the player base on PC. The fighter is a bit niche already and it is heading to a launcher most people avoid like the plague.
Then again, Epic has seen some tremendous success with other titles coming to its digital storefront. The Division 2 sold dramatically better than the original did on Steam and even Metro Exodus saw impressive numbers. There’s a chance that locking Samura Shodown to Epic for a year will foster its own unique community, though that remains to be seen.
If you really just cannot deal with the Epic Games Store, Samurai Shodown is playable on Google’s Stadia service. It doesn’t run particularly well (streaming is not suited for fighters in the slightest), but you’d be able to play it wherever you want. We’re not sure if that version will feature its own bespoke servers for online matches, but I’d imagine SNK isn’t that dumb.
As for what content this PC port will launch with, it will probably share a similar strategy to the recently released Switch conversion. Delayed a few months from its PS4 and Xbox One brethren, the Switch version came with all of the base fighters and had both season passes purchasable on day-one. SNK is likely not giving PC users an “ultimate edition” or anything.
If you were looking forward to Samurai Shodown on Steam, I guess you’ll need to wait another year. By that point, the second season should be finished and there will be a rather large roster to pick through.
