In possibly some of the best news yet to come out of this week, Netflix has just secured the rights to produce a live-action film adaptation of Dragon’s Lair, with Ryan Reynolds as the lead. Hollywood Reporter broke the news early Friday evening, stating that Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds is being eyed to lead the new film franchise. Dragon’s Lair is a property that has tried and failed to be rebooted into a movie several times over, but this just might be the ticket.
In 2015 it was announced that the creators tried to kickstart a campaign to make the ground-breaking game into a movie. However, not much came out of the endeavor, and eventually, the project was never heard of again, until today.
Dragon’s Lair is a game that was popularized in 1983, being one of the first arcade games to introduce fully animated cut scenes. Several critics of video game movies have recently been quelled by the smash-hit success of Sonic The Hedgehog, which broke box office records across the board. It looks like video game movies might be getting the comeback they deserve.
Reynolds is not new to sticking with a passion project until it’s made, having tried to make Deadpool for nearly a decade until it was finally made in 2016. Dragon’s Lair also made a small appearance in Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things at the beginning of season two, and it looks like the 80’s aesthetic may continue at Netflix.
“The plot of the video game is epic in scope: a knight named Dirk the Daring must rescue the fetching Princess Daphne from the clutches of the evil dragon known as Singe and the wizard Mordroc.”
Dan and Kevin Hageman are writing the script, and whose credits include The Lego Movie and more recently Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and are currently showrunners and executive producers on Nickelodeon’s animated show Star Trek. When the film will be produced is yet to be seen, but as for now, fans have a lot to hope for.
