So World of Warcraft might finally be coming to console, and that console might be the PlayStation 5.
There’s no denying that World of Warcraft is one of the biggest games of all time. Dozens of expansions, millions of players, and billions in revenue are all the more surprising due to the fact that World of Warcraft has forever been a PC-only game.
But that might be about to change. A new datamine reveals some interesting lines of code in a recent World of Warcraft update that points to the game coming to PlayStation 4 and 5.
This news comes courtesy of Martin Benjamins via Twitter. He mentions that a recent update added code for controller support–something that WoW has never needed in the past. A subsequent tweet goes further and explicitly states the PS4, PS4 Pro, and PS5 as supported controllers.
“Take with a grain of salt, this does not show usage,” Benjamins cautions." Could be part of a http://Battle.net SDK import or something but the DefaultGamePadBindings file makes me go [thinking face emoji]."
Rumors about World of Warcraft gaining controller support actually prompted WoW community manager Randy “Kaivax” Jordan to respond on the Blizzard forums.
“For a long time, we’ve seen a small number of players turn to 3rd party add-ons, such as Console Port 17, in order to work through certain accessibility issues,” writes Jordan. “We always want to make WoW more widely accessible, if possible, so in Shadowlands, we’re attempting to add some support for keybinds, camera, and turning a character on controllers such as the Xbox Adaptive Controller.”
While this makes sense, why mention PlayStation controller support if these new supports are for the Xbox Adaptive Controller?
As always, none of this has been confirmed from Blizzard so we can’t take any of it as gospel. Blizzard does have a history of bringing their biggest games to consoles (I’m lookin’ at you, Diablo 3), so World of Warcraft getting ported to something like the PlayStation 4 makes sense. The PlayStation 5? That seems like a bit of a waste of computational power.
