A lot of information regarding a rumored new Resident Evil game planned for release in 2021 has leaked over the past weeks. Two key points being that a playable demo was played by Resident Evil ambassadors and that Capcom has since decided to make this new game Resident Evil 8. A new leak claims to have further information about Resident Evil 8, revealing some of the horror game’s early plot points. Note that if accurate, these plot points are potentially significant spoilers.

The premise of the game is that Ethan and Mia, the protagonists of Resident Evil 7, have a child and are living in a remote village. Befitting a Resident Evil game, something goes wrong. A mining accident in the mountains is mentioned and the villagers begin turning into zombies. Ethan, Mia, and their baby struggle to survive along with several still-healthy villagers.

Things go from bad to worse as Blue Umbrella, the American faction of the Umbrella Co., shows up. They begin executing both the zombie villagers and innocent villagers. Ethan attempts to dissuade Blue Umbrella from harming innocents but is knocked out in the process. Mia and their baby are presumably taken. It’s also mentioned that someone who looks like Chris Redfield is seen in one of Blue Umbrella’s helicopters.

Ethan awakens and understandably begins looking for Mia and their child. He talks to a wounded village elder who tells him to go through the mines to a castle, as well as other “spiritual” things. On his journey through the mines, he encounters a sort of werewolf and discovers a lab, “kind of.” It certainly sounds like a Resident Evil story.

The only other thing the leaker mentions is the name of Resident Evil VILLAGE, though he says his source doesn’t think this is the final name.

While the source of this information is unreliable and a self-described “creative writer,” there may be some substance to the rumor. Other leaks acknowledge that a demo of this Resident Evil game was sent to Resident Evil ambassadors, which is a real program that started in August 2019. Other leaks have talked about a castle in the demo, which is referenced in this leak, too. It’s entirely possible that this is a larger summary of the demo, but it’s also possible that it’s completely fake. Expect more information through 2020.

Resident Evil 8 is not officially announced.
