For the past month, Gearbox has been teasing a Borderlands 3 reveal for PAX East 2019 during its panel that’s set to take place tomorrow, March 28. Today is when things really started heating up as Gearbox released a Borderlands 3 teaser trailer to hype fans for tomorrow’s reveal, though it was preceded by a potential leak that may have pulled the curtain back on Borderlands 3 ahead of time.
This information was posted on 4chan, and so Borderlands fans should take it with a big grain of salt. However, some credible gaming leaks have come from 4chan as of late, specifically when it comes to Pokemon Sword and Shield, so it’s not unprecedented for the site to be accurate. Plus, with the Borderlands 3 reveal set to take place at PAX East on March 28, the validity of these claims will either be proven correct or false fairly quickly.
The leak was posted by an anonymous 4chan user, who, if the leak is accurate, revealed plenty of details on Borderlands 3’s world and story. Apparently the game will be set five years after the events of Borderlands 2, and will feature the return of popular characters like Patricia Tannis and Tiny Tina. Handsome Jack, the infamous villain of Borderlands 2, will also be returning, but as an AI and not as a villain.
The leak also touches on the four new Vault Hunters that players will choose from in Borderlands 3, and this information has been corroborated by an earlier leak that claimed to reveal the Borderlands 3 playable characters. One character will be named Flak the Beastmaster, who is an android that can summon AI-controlled creatures to help him in battle. Another is an older male “like Batman” who uses a variety of gadgets to help him stealthily take out enemies.
Another playable character is the woman who was seen in the Borderlands Unreal Engine 4 tech demo, who is able to summon a “bear mech” that other players can ride. The mech will reportedly come from the sky, not unlike Titanfall, which was also claimed in previous leaks. The fourth and final character is a melee-focused Siren who has been compared to Brick from the first Borderlands.
Beyond playable characters, the leak also touches on some gameplay changes in Borderlands 3. Apparently NPCs are now capable of reviving players, and guns will now have changeable parts so players can improve the stats of weapons instead of constantly ditching them for brand new ones.
In a followup post, the leaker goes on to say that the Calypso Twins, a female Siren and a male with Siren-like powers, will serve as the main antagonists of Borderlands 3. The Calypso Twins control a cult called The Children of the Vault who will have their own weapon brand.
Speaking of weapon brands, all weapon brands from the previous games are said to be returning in Borderlands 3 except for the Bandit and Scav brands. Most elements will be returning as well, minus Ice, Laser, and Slag. A new Nuclear element type will apparently be making its debut in Borderlands 3 as well.
Finally, the leak says Borderlands 3 will let players explore multiple planets, including Promethea, which has played a central role in the franchise’s lore. The desert planet of Pandora will also be in the game, though it sounds like it will mainly be in the beginning.
Again, we must stress that there is currently no way to verify this leaked information and there is a chance it is all made up. Luckily, Borderlands fans should find out as early as tomorrow if there’s any truth to this leak or not. And in the meantime, they can keep digging through the Borderlands 3 Mask of Mayhem teaser trailer for more clues.
Borderlands 3 is in development for unspecified platforms.
