As players wait for more news on 343 Studios’ upcoming Halo: Infinite, some fans have dug up rumors that may give an idea of exactly what the game is going to look like. Most notably, the rumors seem to indicate that the gameplay and cutscenes are intended to capture the same quality of God of War’s one shot camera.
The rumor comes from the Real Deal Xbox podcast, where it is mentioned that some of the design choices for Halo: Infinite are somewhat similar to other games, some of which are owned and operated by Sony. Adding to the speculation, some viewers jumped onto ResetEra to discuss what these similarities might be, with many seeming to agree that this likely means that the game will share similarities with God of War in one way or another.
What this means for Halo: Infinite is that the developers are looking to ensure that there are as close to zero cuts in the experience from start to finish. The implication being that the player is never removed from the action, nor do they feel like a simple observer in throughout the game, but instead a living, breathing part of the game world. It wouldn’t even be too much of a departure from the series’ norms to give Halo: Infinite a one shot camera, although it would certainly be an upgrade from how the film technique has been utilized in the past.
Previous game in the series, like Halo: Reach, used a combination of traditional cuts for cinematics, as well as one shot scenes that were generally taken from the player’s point of view as Noble 6. Generally, these scenes, such as George’s sacrifice and Noble 6’s last stand, are used to really ground the emotion of the moment, as well as giving the whole experience somewhat of a found footage feel. Additionally, as some fans pointed out when discussing this rumor, a previous Halo: Infinite trailer already seems to have utilized this technique for the most part, with only minimal cuts throughout the teaser.
It should be noted that this is a rumor with a snowball of speculation behind it, and as a result should be taken with a grain of salt when ramping up excitement for Halo: Infinite. That being said, the reaction for the rumor is also working under the assumption that the one shot camera will be well utilized in this upcoming title, when there is no real guarantee for that. A small minority of players are still on the fence about this technique and 343 Studios has a lot to deliver with Halo: Infinite, making this a somewhat risky decision for such an highly regarded series.
Halo: Infinite is scheduled to release in 2020.
