Although it may feel like the next generation of console gaming is right around the corner, that doesn’t mean hardware producers are necessarily done iterating on the Xbox One and PS4 just yet. Rumors about Xbox Maverick have been floating around for months and the latest report indicates that the console will be a discless Xbox One S arriving in just a few months.

As previously reported, it sounds like codename Maverick is a discless Xbox One S scheduled for a Q1 2019 launch. The latest report, coming from Windows Central, suggests that the name of the console is actually ‘Xbox One S All-Digital Edition.’ The report goes on to suggest that preorders are due to go live mid-April 2019 and that the consoles will ship as early as May 2019.

That is an aggressive timeline and would put the launch of the new hardware ahead of Microsoft’s upcoming appearance at this summer’s E3 event. If this is just being treated like another console bundle, it may not warrant the big stage though. That said, the discless approach does seem in line with Microsoft’s goals, as the company continues to push Xbox Games Pass and promote the all-digital future of console gaming.

If April preorders are actually going to happen, then it seems likely that an official announcement will arrive sometime in the next month or so. It’s possible that Microsoft would wait until the last minute and open pre-orders right as the console iteration is announced, so fans probably shouldn’t hold their breath (even if the rumors are true).

As always, readers should take these kind of reports with a serious dose of salt until the product is actually confirmed by the company. This sort of product does seem like a logical step for Microsoft, but nothing is for certain until we hear about it from the horse’s mouth.
