It’s been quite some time since GTA Online received a significant update. The Diamond Casino Heist dropped all the way back in December of last year, and players have since been waiting for something big to change things up in the city of Los Santos. It sounds like the wait will be well worth it however, as Rockstar Games plans to drop the biggest GTA Online update yet later this year, including a brand new heist and location.
The developer promised a smaller update to drop some time before the end of the summer, which will likely come with the usual amount of cosmetic items, vehicles, and maybe a handful of new missions. It looks like Rockstar is saving its hand for later on this year though, where some significant changes will be set into motion.
The biggest of those changes being a brand new location for the GTA Online map. This could point to a new island popping up near San Andreas, or a brand new map altogether, possibly allowing players to finally travel to story mode’s North Yankton and complete a heist within the snowy town.
While that would be great, the most likely scenario will be something similar to the introduction of the Diamond Casino, allowing players to explore a large new building interior that is also involved with an in-game heist. One guess could be the Maze Bank Arena, where you might rob a professional sports team like something straight out of Ben Affleck’s The Town.
That being said, the fact that Rockstar is openly calling this the game’s biggest update yet could mean that we’ll be getting something much larger than a new interior to explore. After a seven year lifespan and a plan to extend the series onto the next generation of consoles, something as significant as a brand new location outside of the current map could be enough to justify it.
Either way, we won’t know until Rockstar gives us more information down the road. We do know that an enhanced version of GTA Online is planned for the PS5 and Xbox Series X, along with a brand new exclusive edition of the game that will come to PlayStation Plus subscribers before anyone else. This giant update may run in line with those plans, so here’s to hoping Rockstar won’t disappoint.
