The long wait is finally over for the next massive update to Red Dead Redemption 2, as Rockstar Games says that the new content will arrive on Tuesday, July 28, with specific details coming soon. The update will feature a new Frontier Pursuit that will introduce players to the secrets of naturalism, forming part of an all-new Role. There will also be a new Outlaw Pass, community-requested features, and more – all added over the following months.
The news comes at the right time as well, since players have begun protesting their discontent with the lack of new content in game by dressing up as clowns. According to the Red Dead Online Discord, moderator Magnar describes the clown bit: “Since we’re all clowns for believing we’ll get an update, it’s fitting that we dress up as them in-game too."
GTA Online will also be seeing a new summer updated added soon, offering a fun mix of new content, though no specific date has been issues for this. However, since it appears that we will be playing GTA Online forever (or at least for the next five or so years on the next-gen) – it seems only right for Rockstar Games to keep pumping out something new to do in this seven-year-old game.
In the end, any news of more content for both titles is good news, but it also begs the question: how long after and how frequently should a developer continue to add content to a game post-release? This is more aimed at Red Dead Redemption 2, which has a high-quality, single player experience, and plenty to do online.
Obviously, players will run through the available content as it is released, but it would not be surprising if Rockstar Games suddenly announced that they would only be adding “new” content a couple of times of year, which would be a way to temporarily bring players back. Red Dead Redemption 2 is not an MMORPG and its natural lifespan should reach a dignified end, rather than be stuffed with superfluous content for years to come.
