Fans of Rocket League will be able to drive around in the Ghostbuster’s Ecto 1 and Knight Rider’s K.I.T.T. starting on June 10 as a throwback to the ’80s in an event called Radical Summer.
Since its initial release in 2015, Rocket League has quickly garnered worldwide attention and even held tournaments with prize pools of a million dollars due to its popularity. The game has made a lot thanks to its implementation of loot boxes, which allow players to unlock special cars and items that they can then use to customize vehicles in their inventory. Though players always had the ability to unlock special cars, their chances of getting certain cars were completely random. During Radical Summer, things will be different, though, as players will be able to buy the cars they want.
Previously, players would need to buy DLC or purchase a season pass in order to gain access to certain vehicles. However, if Psyonix is able to make this event a success, it will have a real chance of changing the way that other companies handle their season passes and special events in the future.
Radical Summer will run for nine weeks, starting on June 10 and ending on August 12. The event will cover three themes of the ’80s, including blockbusters, culture, and television. Players will have the opportunity to purchase limited time vehicles and win free items, all while participating in special game modes that are only available during the event. Through purchasing the Ecto 1, players will also gain access to custom wheels, a slimmer topper, proton pack boost, and a Ghostbuster player banner and avatar. Though some aspects of the event have already been revealed by Psyonix, the company is keeping other key details a secret for now.
It’s nice to see that Rocket League is attempting to spice things up and add a bit more variation to the game. The fact that it is releasing new cars for low prices also seems to indicate that it is preparing for the eventual removal of paid loot boxes.
The Radical Summer event will certainly bring players back into the game. However, it’s strange that Psyonix isn’t allowing players to obtain limited time cars through other means.
