Psyonix has announced that Rocket League will soon be free-to-play on the Epic Games Store. This is great news, and will add even more players to a game that, five years after launch, is brimming with activity, high-quality updates, and a growing esports scene.

The details are slowly being released, but for the most part there should be little change or inconvenience for current players who purchased the game. For starters, new players will only be able to pick up the game on the Epic Games Store, while those players who own the game on any other platform, including Steam, will still be able to play as they normally do and still have access to all updates. The only real exception is that Steam users will no longer be able to download the game for new players.

Changes will be made to the menu UI, though that should be considered more of an overhaul and update that is long overdue. Tournaments and Challenges are also seeing changes, and most important of all, the developers are adding in cross-platform progression. This is a great incentive to keep playing Rocket League on your favorite device, confidant in the knowledge that time spent on one platform will be rewards on all platforms.

  • Existing players meanwhile will be rewarded with Legacy status, which includes: All Rocket League-branded DLC released before free to play “Est. 20XX” title that displays the first year you played Rocket League 200+ Common items upgraded to “Legacy” quality Golden Cosmos Boost Dieci-Oro Wheels Huntress Player Banner

All of these rewards will become available as soon as the game transitions formally to free-to-play later this summer.

In sum, this will be a net-win for current players. The developers have stated that current inventory will remain unaffected. Anything that a player has worked hard over the last five years to unlock will remain in their possession. With cross-platform progression, players will also have the ability to progress their Rocket Pass and Competitive Rank, all through the Epic Games Account.

For now, this is exciting news for the future of Rocket League, and there is more to come as the transition nears. Psyonix invites its users to follow on Twitter to ensure they never miss any of the upcoming announcements about the future of Rocket League.
