One of many announcements at the Electronic Arts digital EA Play event was Rocket Arena, a game originally announced in 2019 from publisher Nexon. Now under EA’s oversight, Rocket Arena is nearing completion and will launch on PC and consoles starting June 14.
Rocket Arena is a third-person multiplayer shooter that’s much more than is immediately apparent. It’s not just a standard shooter like Overwatch or Fortnite. Rather, it combines elements of Super Smash Bros. and the Sumo mini-game to create a gameplay experience where players have to push their enemies outside of a competitive zone using rockets, weapons, and assorted other abilities.
This first core mode is named Knockout and, like explained, is akin to a 3D shooter version of Super Smash Bros. It also features additional 3v3 game modes like Rocketball, where scoring goals is the focus; Mega Rocket, which is a capture zone mode; and Treasure Hunt, which involves gathering coins. Rocket Arena will also feature Tutorial, Practice, and Custom Game Modes, naturally.
Behind the games and modes, Rocket Arena is still a class-based shooter. There are currently 12 different classes/characters announced for the game, though one would expect more will be added sooner and later. Each character has three different abilities, a primary offensive ability, a secondary wild card ability, and a game-changer special ability.
Expect to hear a lot more about Rocket Arena in the coming weeks as the game gets nearer to launch. And don’t worry about which platform to buy the game one, as it supports full-crossplay between PC and consoles.
Rocket Arena launches July 14 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
