Roblox might not have the fancy graphics, responsive controls, or narrative depth of more high-profile games. But what it lacks in that, it makes up for in customization and the ability to spend loads of cash in countless different ways – leading to recent reports that players spent over $100 million on the free-to-play game.

According to research done by SafeBettingSites.com, players poured $102.9 million dollars into the game during the month of May of 2020 alone. The site states that this is 175% more than players spent on the game in May of 2019, and a 55% increase over how much players spend at the beginning of the year. This jump, they say, implies that the global COVID-19 pandemic has influenced players to spend more on in-game purchases.

What’s  more, this only accounts for the money paid by mobile players. The game is available on Xbox and PC as well, meaning that there’s likely far more money getting spent on the game than the $100 million we know about.

The way that Roblox makes money is through its in-game currency, Robux. Like most premium currencies in free-to-play games, its sold at different tiers, with higher payment amounts gathering players more Robux per dollar spent.

These Robux can be spent on cosmetics, of course, but hey can also be spent inside player-made words in a variety of different ways. One of the big draws of Roblox is the fact that users have versatile game-creation tools that let them construct whatever they wish in-game. The benefit to the creators is that, if their game entices players to spend their Robux, they get to cash them out at a rate of $350 for every 100,000 Robux spent.

It’s a business plan that seems to be working well for the game, which is gathering more players and more purchases by the day.
