One of the best things about Risk of Rain 2 is the community it fostered. Since its original launch in March of 2019 fans of this challenging run-and-gun has created all sorts of weird and interesting mods to play with. From new monsters and maps to heroes from other games and even a couple of anime characters (The DBZ roster proving particularly popular).
Now a four-man dev team has come up with an addition to the game that nobody would have expected to try, it lets you play it in VR. Apparently being able to jump right into the fast-paced action in first-person has proven to be quite popular as the mod’s download numbers sky-rocketed to over 10,277 copies of it installed. If you’re interested in taking a step into the VR realm of Risk of Rain 2 then here’s everything you need to know about this unique mod.
10 What Is It?
The mod is a full VR conversion that puts players in the first-person perspective of their hero of choice as they dart around the multi-layered monster-filled maps of Risk of Rain 2. This reduction in the view also gives the monsters and creatures you encounter a grander scale, as they tower and float above you.
Also, not only has the camera view been changed, but each hero’s gameplay style has also been adapted to VR. So for example, as the Huntress, you physically have to draw her bow or you can dual wield handguns like an action hero as the Commando.
9 Who Made It?
The mod was created by a four-man team led by a user that goes by the name of DrBibop. According to the mods store page, he was helped by his friends Elliotate, MrPurple, and HutchyBen who also contributed to the creation of the mod.
The mod itself seems like a labor of love from the team of modders who really seem to enjoy the game with so much work having been put into the mod. The team is currently accepting donations on Patreon and they regularly post updates on what they have been up to.
8 It Works With Most Headsets
Dealing with problems of headset compatibility with certain mods or games can be a heartbreaking affair. Thankfully, this addon works with most PC-based Virtual Reality headsets. Currently, it’s compatible with the Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality, Valve Index, and HTC Vive. So there are plenty of options available for you.
7 PC System Requirements
Making sure your rig has the right requirements to run something, especially VR, can be a bit of a nightmare. Luckily the Virtual Reality mod for Risk of Rain 2 is not overly demanding. Generally, if your PC can handle a headset and the base game then you should be fine.
6 Motion Controls
One of the main selling points of trying out the VR mod is the fact that it integrates the motion controls with your character’s attacks. This differs greatly from the base game where you would normally continually click or dance your fingers around a Hotbar, instead, you can point your arms and blast away with your weapon of choice.
Each character’s fighting style and skills are mapped to the motion controls. So you can spin the revolver of the gunslinger, dual wield the pistols of the mercenary, physically draw arrows into the bow for the Huntress or wave around the grinding arms of the Loader. It’s an incredibly creative remix of the gameplay and guarantees hours of exhausting arm-waving anarchy.
5 How To Download The Mod
Sometimes playing with mods can be an absolute nightmare as some like to conflict with others or an update comes out that bricks it completely. Luckily the VR mod for Risk of Rain 2 is easy to download and get up and running.
It’s currently available for free through the Thunderstore, an online platform that provides plenty of Risk of Rain 2 mods to play with. It also provides its own installer software to streamline things even further. So you can browse other additions whilst you wait for the VR Mod to finish downloading.
4 VR Can Be Used With Non-VR Players
One really interesting feature of this mod is that you can use it to play with non-VR players. Not only does that keep the massive player base of the base game open to people that like to use this mod, but it can also encourage others to give it a try as you can physically move around and wave at them with your character.
So if you plan on downloading this free addon, then you can rest assured that you will still be able to play with your friends. After all, taking down hordes of monsters and then the intense battle with Mithrix at the end of Risk of Rain 2 is better done in a group.
3 You May Get Motion Sickness
Motion sickness and VR tend to go hand in hand. Whilst most games can get around this by providing some form of teleportation or screen-fade in turning to reduce it. Unfortunately, no such solution is available in this mod, so be prepared to feel ill.
This is because Risk of Rain 2 is a game that features a high amount of movement since standing still punishes players. There is smooth and snap turning available, but if you’re more prone to motion sickness from the smallest amount of disorientation then this might be a bit of a rough time.
2 It Runs On Most Launchers
VR games and mods can often be a little fickle, running smoothly for the longest time before crashing spectacularly or just refusing to load up at all. Usually, this can be put down to flaws in the mod or incompatibility with a headsets particular launcher software.
Oculus Quest, for example, does have a number of issues with a range of VR mods for games, Subnauticas VR addon being a particularly notorious one. Steams Virtual Reality launcher is also prone to problems. Thankfully, the team behind this mod has taken that into consideration and has ensured that it’s compatible with as many launchers as possible.
1 They Have A Discord Server
Usually, when a mod for a game comes out it’s released into the wilds of the Community and then left to fend for itself. But with the VR mod, there has been a lot of positive reception and support from a growing Risk of Rain 2 fanbase. So much that the developers have had to create a Discord Server for everyone.
So if you want more friends to meet in VR, or to keep track of the development of the mod then it’s recommended to check it out. The server is available through a link that can be found on the team’s Patreon page.
