The 2020 League of Legends World Championship, the series’ tenth iteration, will be held from September 25 to October 31 in Shanghai, China. Organized by Riot Games, the event seems to already have a theme song secured.

On the official League of Legends Twitter account, Riot teased a five-second clip for Take Over, which will drop on September 17. Fans can listen to the actual song at 10am CT and find out who the artist responsible is. The song can be pre-saved on most streaming services, including Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, and Tidal.

Riot usually releases the new championship theme song along with an animated video that features professional players and league champions. Past songs have been performed by a range of artists, such as Imagine Dragons, Nicki Taylor, Cailin Russo, Chrissy Costanza, Against The Current, and Zedd.

To illustrate the popularity of the songs, Phoenix, the sixth Worlds song to be released, accumulated over 7.2 million views on YouTube within two days. Although the event dates back to 2011, Riot began adding an official theme song six years ago. Past songs include the following:

  • Warriors (2014) Worlds Collide (2015) Ignite (2016) Legends Never Die (2017) Rise (2018) Phoenix (2019)

Riot has also released songs at the start of the season with cinematic animations, such as Awaken ft. Valerie Broussard in 2019 and a new version of Warriors ft. 2WEI and Edda Hayes for this year’s season.

For the 2020 event, 22 teams from 11 regions qualified based on their ranking in regional circuits in China, Europe, North America, South Korea and Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau/Southeast Asia. Ten of those teams will reach the main event via a play-in stage.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the cancelation of numerous esports tournaments, Riot has decided to go ahead with the 2020 League of Legends World Championship in Shanghai, though the company has forgone the previous multi-city hosting format. On August 1, Riot announced the official dates and location of the event, with all stages set in Shanghai in an “isolation bubble” environment.
