As more players acquire access to the closed beta for VALORANT, there is an increase in discussion regarding Riot Games’ anti-cheat system the comes bundled into the game client. From the moment a user has their PC turned on the system is virtually always at work, which is a major problem for some users, both from a privacy standpoint and also for the technical problems that arise.
A Riot representative spoke with Kotaku and made it clear that the system, named Riot Vanguard, “needs this depth of access to stop aggressive cheaters.” A Reddit user pointed out how this can be problematic if the system is compromised and a user does not get an update to fix this in a timely manner. During that time they would be exposed to a range of problems, which is cause for concern.
While this seems excessive, Riot Vanguard is probably here to stay in its current form. This is because Riot Games pledged to come down hard on hackers, and this is what is needed to do so. While the program may be invasive, the obvious solution is simply not to play the game if one is so concerned with the potential for harm to their PC.
