Sony created significant buzz for its next-generation console at the PlayStation 5 game reveal event, showcasing a number of titles that have PlayStation fans excited to add the PS5 to their console collection. However, some were disappointed that Sony didn’t cap off the PS5 game reveal event by announcing the new console’s price or release date. Nothing official has been announced, but a retailer may have spilled the beans about the PS5 price.
Play-Asia had a listing up for PS5 pre-orders with a $699.99 price tag. This would make the PS5 Sony’s most expensive console to date, with the previous one being the pricey PS3. This very high price would likely put a PS5 purchase out of the question for many consumers. But before fans get too upset about such a high PS5 price point, it should be noted that this is unlikely to be the actual price of the console.
The more likely scenario is that the Play-Asia listing (which has been edited to remove the price) is just a placeholder. With the ever-changing global events, it’s possible Sony itself doesn’t even know exactly what the PS5 price will be at this point, and so a retailer knowing it is just as unlikely. Not only that, but Play-Asia listed the hefty $699.99 price tag for both the regular version of the PS5 console as well as the digital edition.
For the uninitiated, Sony is selling two versions of the PlayStation 5. One is the standard version of the console that will include a disc drive, but the other is the PS5 Digital Edition, and as its name implies, it’s entirely digital with no disc drive. One has to imagine that the PS5 Digital Edition will be available at a lower price than its standard edition counterpart, especially since it will be shipping without a disc drive.
If the Play-Asia listing is accurate, it should be noted that it also claims the PS5 release date is some time in December of this year. That also seems unlikely and could be one of the biggest tells that this listing was simply made in error, as “December” is a common placeholder date for when retailers aren’t sure exactly when something is going to come out that year.
Ultimately, fans shouldn’t put much stock into any PS5 price listings that appear online until Sony itself makes the official announcement. It remains to be seen when that will be, but it’s possible that a PS5 price and release date announcement will come before the end of summer.
