While the year 2020 has not been kind to most video game publishers and studios’ production cycles, the same can’t be said for the sales of big video games themselves. With COVID-19 forcing most people to stay at home, games like Animal Crossing: New Leaf and The Last Us: Part II have continued to shatter sales expectations. The same can be said for Capcom, boasting terrific sales on franchises such as Resident Evil and Monster Hunter.

According to Gamesindustry.biz, Q2 of 2020 saw Capcom reporting net sales of $223 million (up 32% year-over-year), operating income of $101 million (up 39%), and net income of $73.6 million (up 44%).

Capcom’s remake of Resident Evil 3 sold 2.7 million units, increasing the cumulative franchise sales to 103 million units. The continued support for Resident Evil instills hope in fans of the franchise. With the announcement of Resident Evil: Village, Capcom does not seem to be willing to go back to the action style of Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6, even though the two are the highest selling games in the franchise.

Monster Hunter World, Capcom’s highest-selling game of all time, continues to impress with the game’s lifetime sales growing to 16 million units. Monster Hunter World: Iceborn, which was released in September 2019, helped to add to that number, selling 5 million units worldwide.

The Street Fighter and Dead Rising franchises also boast impressive numbers. The Street Fighter franchise reached 45 million units sold and the Dead Rising franchise reached over 14 million.

The impressive sales numbers continue to show Capcom’s slow revitalization over the past while. The Resident Evil franchise in particular seemed almost impossible to save after Resident Evil 6’s lackluster reception. Street Fighter 5 frustrated fans and franchises like Devil May Cry and Mega Man seemed like relics of the past. The announcement of Resident Evil 7 proved to be a turning point for the franchise and the studio. The game reinvented what a Resident Evil game could be while also understanding what made the original games so great. Monster Hunter: World, Devil May Cry 5, and Mega Man 11 all followed suit and received incredible commercial and critical success. The long time studio seems to be poised to continue their renaissance into the next generation.
